#4 Common Properties of Glass

The properties of glass varies and this properties of glass are majorly determined during the process of glass manufacturing. However, during manufacturing of glass there are commonly shared glass properties that exist among all types of glass (Toughen, Laminated, flat and more) curved during manufacturing.

For the sake of this post, our focus will be on just four (4) common properties of glass:

  • Recyclable
  • Toughness
  • Workable
  • Transparent
  1. Recyclable:One of the unique properties of glass is that it is 100% recyclable. Fragments, chips or scraps of broken or waste glass gathered can be re-melted and used as raw materials in glass manufacture, and other related construction. This particular property of glass is not as popular as compared to other properties of glass.
  2. Toughness: Glass generally is a fragile material and can easily break. However, through the use of science and technology, glass can either be Toughened/Tempered or Laminated which will definitely increase its ability to resist breakage under pressure.
  3. Workable:  Every type of Glass has the capability to be worked on in different ways so as to give different forms such that can be blown, drawn or pressed. Glass can be manufactured to give diverse properties in terms of clarity, tint, colour, diffused and stained.
  4. Transparent: A glass can be as transparent just as a clean water is transparent. A common property of glass is that it allows for optical connection with the outside world but the twist in the transparency of glass comes with the use of admixtures and some coloured chemicals. The admixtures and coloured chemicals affects the transparency of the glass and can permanently alter the glass to avoid the optical connection.

GLASS FACT: HISTORY OF GLASS

Where and when glass production began is uncertain. It is thought by some that the first glass was probably developed in the Mitannian or Hurrian region of Mesopotamia, possibly as an extension of the production of glazes (5000 BCE). Glass objects dated back to 2500 BCE have been found in Syria, and by 2450 BCE, glass beads were plentiful in Mesopotamia. Glass came later in Egypt, with its manufacture appearing as a major industry around 1500 BCE. The oldest glass of undisputed date found in Egypt dates from 2200 BCE.

In the beginning it was very hard and slow to manufacture glass. Glass melting furnaces were small and the heat they produced was hardly enough to melt glass. But in the 1st century BC, Syrian craftsmen invented the blow pipe. This revolutionary discovery made glass production easier, faster and cheaper. Glass production flourished in the Roman Empire and spread from Italy to all countries under its rule. In 1000 AD the Egyptian city of Alexandria was the most important center of glass manufacture. Throughout Europe the miraculous art of making stained glass on churches and cathedrals across the continent reached its height in the finest Chatres and Conterbury cathedral windows produced in the 13th and 14th centuries.

By 1575, English glassmakers were made glass in Venetian fashion. In 1674, an English glassmaker George Ravenscroft invented lead glass.

The first glass factory in the United States was built in Jamestown, Virginia in 1608.

In the early 1800’s, there was a great demand for window glass which was called crown glass. In the 1820s, the age of blowing individual bottles, glasses and flasks was ended by the invention of a hand-operated machine. In the 1870s, the first semi-automatic bottle machine was introduced.

After 1890, glass use, development and manufacture began to increase rapidly. Machinery has been developed for precise, continuous manufacture of a host of products. In 1902, Irving W. Colburn invented the sheet glass drawing machine which made possible the mass production of window glass. In 1904, the American engineer Michael Owens patented automatic bottle blowing machine.

In 1959 new revolutionary float glass production was introduced by Sir Alastair Pilkington by which 90% of flat glass is still manufactured today.

Clear Toughened/Tempered Glass

Toughened or tempered glass is a type of glass that has been heated to softening point then rapidly cooled. Toughened glass can be four to five times stronger than float glass and it offers the highest resistance to impact. Toughened glass is treated to be far more resistant to breakage than simple annealed glass (i.e normal glass) and to break in a more predictable way when it does eventually breaks, thus providing a major safety advantage in almost all of its applications. It is ideal for application in doors, buildings, car windshields, windows, glass portions of building facades, glass sliding doors and partitions in houses and offices, glass furniture such as table tops, and many other products typically use toughened glass. If broken, the whole pane of glass shatters into small pieces that are relatively safe.

Toughened glass has different properties and this can be broken down into mechanical, has higher thermal strength, fragmentation and other properties.

 

Thermal Shock Resistance: withstand high temperature changes up to 250°C
Mechanical Strength: four to five times stronger
Tensile Strength: 65MPa
Conducive for Processing: Cannot be cut after Tempering
furnace heat point (annealing point): above its annealing point of 600 °C
Bending Strength: 120-200 N/mm2
Fragmentation: Tempered glass cannot be cut or altered.

How Is Glass Processed?

Glass production involves two main methods: the float glass process that produces sheet glass, and glassblowing that produces bottles and other containers. For this post, we would be discussing the float glass process.

Float Glass Process

The float glass manufacturing process was developed by Pilkington in 1959, taking flat glass technology to a revolutionary new level. The glass gains its lustrous finish and perfect flatness by floating on a bath of molten tin in a chemically controlled atmosphere. The ribbon of glass is then cooled, while still moving, until the surfaces are hard enough for it to be taken out of the bath without the roller marking the surface. The glass is then automatically cut and stacked, ready to be packed for distribution to local and international customers. Below are the stages of float glass processing:

1) Sand, limestone, soda ash, dolomite, iron oxide and salt cake are mixed together with cullet in the batch plant.

2) The raw materials are then charged into a large furnace to be melted at 1600°C. They combine in a process of physical transformation to form molten glass.

3) A continuous ribbon of molten glass is fed out of the melting furnace onto the surface of an enclosed bath of molten tin at 1100°C. The molten glass literally floats on top of the tin, and as it flows along the surface of the tin bath away from the delivery canal, it forms a ribbon of uniform thickness. Thickness is controlled by the speed at which solidifying glass ribbon is drawn off from the bath.

4) The glass is then lifted from the tin bath onto rollers to the annealing lehr to be cooled down. At this stage the internal stresses are released ensuring perfect flatness and solidity.

5) Once cooled down and solidified the glass goes to the cutting area where it is cut in to a large sheet of ‘jumbo size’ (6×3.21 meters) or ‘cut-size’ which are specific to customer orders, before being stacked for transportation.

What is Glass?

Glass is a combination of sand and other minerals that are melted together at very high temperatures to form a material that is needed for a wide range of uses. Apart from being transparent, inexpensive to make, easy to shape when it’s molten, it is a hard brittle substance,
typically transparent or translucent. Irrespective of the shape or size, glass is made from liquid sand. This occurs by fusing sand with soda and lime and cooling rapidly.

Today man has mastered the glass-making process and can make many different types of glass in infinitely varied colours formed into a wide range of products. Glass, chemically, is actually more like a liquid, but at room temperature it is so viscous or sticky it looks and feels like a solid. At higher temperatures glass gradually becomes softer and more like a liquid. It is this latter property, which allows glass to be poured, blown, pressed and moulded into such a variety of shapes.

It’s important to know that glass is one of the oldest and most versatile human-created materials in the world and one of the most popular material in our homes. Glass can be found wherever you look, both within and without a building: Building constructions are majorly made with glass; rooms in your home will have a glass window or a glass mirror, cars have glass installed for protection and clearer vision, our gadgets are made with glass screens. Glass as a material in its own, will always exist. But many new applications and manufacturing processes will involve glass in combination with other materials.
