Why Tempered Glass is 5x Stronger

Toughened or tempered glass is a type of safety glass processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared with normal glass. Tempering puts the outer surfaces into compression and the inner surfaces into tension. Such stresses cause the glass, when broken, to crumble into small granular chunks instead of splintering into jagged shards as plate glass (a.k.a. annealed glass) creates. The granular chunks are less likely to cause injury. You can read more about tempered/toughened glass online our previous post on http://glass.com.ng/clear-toughenedtempered-glass/.

After tempering, the stress pattern developed by the glass is high, and the mechanical strength of tempered glass is four to five times higher than that of annealed glass.

When tempered glass is broken, all the stored energy is released at once and the glass breaks into small pieces.

Characteristics of Tempered/Toughened glass:

These characteristics explain why tempered/Toughened glass is 5x stronger and most preferred option which is largely available to buy online in Lagos, Nigeria.

  • Mechanical Strength of Tempered Glass = 5x Mechanical strength of Annealed Glass
  • Tempered/Toughened glass is four to five times stronger than annealed glass of the same size and thickness against impact.
  • Tempered glass has higher thermal strength, and it can withstand high temperature changes up to 250°C.
  • Tempered/Toughened glass is considered as safety glass. It is difficult to break and even in the event of a breakage, disintegrates into small relatively harmless globules.
  • Tempering does not alter the basic characteristics of glass such as light transmission and solar radiant heat properties of normal glass.
  • The glass surface after heat treatment has the same resistance to surface damage as annealed glass.
  • Tempered/Toughened glass cannot be cut or altered.
  • Strength & Safety Considerations
    • Four to five times stronger than annealed glass
    • Two to three times stronger than heat strengthened glass
    • Fragments into small, relatively harmless pieces, reducing the likelihood of injury.

Need for Tempered/Toughened Glass especially in Lagos, Nigeria:

There is an increasing need for the use of tempered/toughened glass in Lagos, Nigeria especially in specific areas of the building such as shower cubicle, front door and table tops. Glass.com.ng has provided the best means to buy tempered/toughened glass online

Tempering increases tensile strength, thermal shock resistance, and safety of normal glass. It also increases its heat withstanding capacity. Because of these properties, tempered glass is preferred in applications where strength, safety and thermal resistance are important considerations.

We live and operate in a very tightly held local historical city ( Lagos State, Nigeria) and as a very peculiar market in Sub Sahara Africa, yet glass is one of the less subjective issues that we deal with when it comes to conservation and planning.

In Nigeria you will find many buildings are now starting to use glass to clad the buildings that were once stone or brick. I credit local/ national vehicle garages who have somewhat been a leader in glass entrances/ buildings.. Don’t believe me? Just drive down to your local Car dealer showroom on Adetokunboh Ademola Str V-Island or similar.

For the very reasons we have listed, you can see the attraction of glass.

There are several types of hinge systems that can be used, with either self closing or swing free,  huge selection of other hardware including door handles ( the fish handles in the picture are custom made and designed by us)

Why does glass sometimes appear green?

This particular question relating to why glass sometimes appear green is a relatively common question we get about glass.
The greenish tint on glass table tops and glass table covers comes from the iron content used in the manufacturing process. This is typical of all glass table tops and table covers in the furniture industry, and is known as clear glass. This greenish tint is most noticeable when looking at the glass piece from the edges.
If this is something you prefer to avoid, you can opt for low-iron glass. Low-iron glass has all the same properties as clear glass, but the low iron content means a clearer look and substantially less greenish tint.

Type of Glass Used in Windows

There are 3 main areas to consider when thinking about windows and glazing for your project: natural light, solar heat gain and thermal conductivity. These areas determine the type of glass to be installed. NFO Glass suggests some:

GLASS TYPES

Clear Float Glass (Annealed)

Float Glass also referred to as Annealed is a visually colourless and distortion free glass which provides high light transmission (daylight) and clarity. Clear Float glass is the core base product for most of performance glass products and is commonly used in windows and doors

Additional Info:

  • Float glass offers no additional performance benefits in terms of insulation or reduction in solar heat gain
  • Float glass will shatter and may produce dangerous shards of glass if broken

Tinted Glass

Tinted glass is produced by adding metal oxides to float glass during manufacture. Tinted glass absorbs and re-radiates solar energy reducing heat and in can provide cost efficient climate control. Tinted glass also reduces sun glare and is aesthetically appealing.

Tinted glass is available most commonly in colours such as Grey, Green, Bronze & Blue.

Additional Info

  • Tinted glass may be used to control solar heat gain but typically provides limited insulation benefit
  • Tinted glass will shatter and may produce dangerous shards of glass if broken.

Reflective Glass

Reflective Glass achieves offers greater solar control than standard tinted float glass and can be used to create a specific visual appearance in a building.

A metallic coating is applied during the manufacturing process and creates a highly reflective appearance.

Additional Info:

  • Tinted glass may be used to control solar heat gain but typically provides limited insulation benefit
  • Reflective glass is typically available in  Clear, Neutral, Green, Grey, Bronze and Blue colours.

Toughened/Tempered Glass

Toughened/Tempered Glass is extremely strong and often used for safety features. If this glass breaks, it will break into small pieces like stone. This Glass is ideal for reducing the chance of injury in the event of breakage.

Most popular glass types can be toughened/tempered and they are available in  Clear, Tinted, Reflective and Low E glass types.

Additional Info:

  • Toughened glass will shatter into small relatively harmless pieces if broken
  • Toughened glass is stronger than annealed glass
  • Various forms of glass including performance glass can be toughened

Laminated Glass

Laminated Glass is made up of two or more layers of glass permanently bonded together with an interlayer. The lamination process results in the glass panels holding together in the event of breakage, reducing the risk of harm. This Glass is the best for reducing noise. It also resists ultraviolet rays providing the highest degree of protection from the sun.

Most popular glass types can be laminated and are available in  Clear, Tinted, Reflective and Low E glass types. Laminated glass is a popular choice for residential and commercial windows and doors.

Additional Info:

  • Laminated glass will hold together if broken reducing the risk of danger from broken glass
  • Various performance qualities can be added to laminated glass using a specially selected interlayer

LowE glass

Low Emissivity glass has a thin metallic coating on the glass that reflects thermal radiation or inhibits its emission reducing heat transfer through the glass. This glass provides an excellent option to increase your comfort and save energy.

LowE glass is available in a range of colours including, Clear, Neutral, Blue, Green and Grey

Additional Info:

  • LowE glass provides improved insulation properties and is a good choice in all weather situations

Double Glazing

Double glazing referred to Insulated Glass Units consist of two panes of glass bonded to both sides of an spacer to create one unit. The space between the panes of glass may be filled with Argon gas to increase the insulating properties of the double glazing units.

Double glazing can be made up of various types of glass including LowE, Laminated, Toughened, Tinted or reflective glass

How to Choose a Glass Table Top For the Dining Table

Using a glass table top provides the perfect look for your dining room table, since its beauty or elegance can give the  dinner a special feel. For a dining room, you can use the glass as a glass table cover for your current table or create a table from glass over a table stand. Glass is easy to clean and it last longer compared to wood. This post will serve as guide to help you choose the right glass table tops for a dining table.

Choosing The Shape

First factor to consider before choosing your glass table is what shape your dining table glass should be. At NFO Glass, we offer varieties of glass shapes ranging from round, square and rectangle glass table tops, in addition we can custom cut glass to any size and shape you need. Different shapes provides different purposes for instance, a rectangular or oval table provides a lot of dining room seating, while a square or round table helps a smaller group interact better during dinner since everyone faces each other. Also the shape might be determined by the dining room layout or the shape of the table or stand that will go underneath the glass.

Customizing The Glass

There are different options to customize the thickness, color, finish and polish of the dining table glass. The polish is based on personal preference, although beveled or pencil edge polishes add more elegance to the table to fit a dining room. You can choose a stunning clear glass table or opt for a bright or bold color to fit the decor of the room. For the finish, tempered glass is a stronger safety glass if you have kids or the table will have heavy use. For the thickness, choose thinner glass for a delicate, refined look or thicker glass for heavy use or if the table will hold a lot of weight.

Tips: Number of people per table measurements

  • Round table: 4 people at a table of 914mmx1270mm, 6 people at a 1168mmx1676mm table and 8-10 people at a table over 1270mm.
  • Square table: four people can fit a 914mmx1219mm table, 6-8 people at a 1219mmx1524mm table and 12 people at a table over 1524mm.
  • Rectangular table: 6 people with a size of 914mmx1219mm to 1066mmx1981mm, 10 at a table of 1117mmx2133mm and up to 14 at a table or 1219mmx2438mm.
  • Oval table: 6 people at 914mmx1524mm to 1066mmx1828mm, 10 at 1117mmx2133mm or up to 14 at 1219mmx2438mm.
