Why you should switch to glass frameless balustrades or handrails

Glass balustrades or handrails are more than just a safety feature, they are the stylish, durable and robust safety alternative that can turn any commercial or domestic space from mediocre to show-stopping.
Used on landings, staircases, balconies, mezzanine floors, high walkways and patios, there are a multitude of ways to incorporate glass balustrades or handrails into your interiors, so what is stopping you?

Here are the top five reasons why you should switch to glass balustrades or handrails today.

1. Enhances Style of Building glass

Used correctly, glass balustrades or handrails can enhance the style of your building to achieve an unforgettable ‘wow’ factor. Glass.com.ng allows you to create a personalised modern space with a mix of decorative glass combined with different railing options, producing a structure unique to you. Using glass for your balustrades allows you to enhance the views of both your outdoor and indoor space whilst allowing natural and ambient light to reach all areas in your building.

2. Safety

To ensure extra security, the glass material used for glass balustrades is thick, toughened safety glass which is difficult to break and does not shatter, permitting the balustrades to withstand just about any conditions. To add extra security to your space, you can also fix extra railings to the balustrades, both on the interior and exterior as required.

3. Easily Maintained
Few materials clean as easily as glass – with a simple wipe with a cloth, any traces of smudges or grime can be removed. The flat and glossy surface of laminated glass also allows glass balustrades to remain dust free for long periods of time. Dents and scratches are also issues most building materials are vulnerable to, but as glass is abrasion-resistant, it can much more easily withstand surface wear and tear, therefore making it the ideal balustrade material.

4. Eco-Friendly
Glass is 100% recyclable and one of few materials that does not degrade during the recycling process, allowing it to be recycled multiple times without any loss of quality. Choosing glass balustrades not only offers visual appeal but can boost your company’s environmental impact.

5. Cost-Effective
Versatility and strength makes glass one of the best structural items to use. Glass can be moulded into several different shapes, and unlike materials such as wood, glass will not discolour, rot or deform, making it an overall longer-lasting product. Glass balustrades are a good investment for your building as glass will look as good as new for years to come.

As a leading Nigeria’s commercial supplier, Glass.com.ng have the skills and knowledge in-house to be able to provide you with exactly the right materials for your project. So, if you would like to find out further about glass balustrades and how you can install them safely, please do get in touch. Why Tempered Glass is 5x Stronger

Toughened or tempered glass is a type of safety glass processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared with normal glass. Tempering puts the outer surfaces into compression and the inner surfaces into tension. Such stresses cause the glass, when broken, to crumble into small granular chunks instead of splintering into jagged shards as plate glass (a.k.a. annealed glass) creates. The granular chunks are less likely to cause injury. You can read more about tempered/toughened glass online our previous post on http://glass.com.ng/clear-toughenedtempered-glass/.

After tempering, the stress pattern developed by the glass is high, and the mechanical strength of tempered glass is four to five times higher than that of annealed glass.

When tempered glass is broken, all the stored energy is released at once and the glass breaks into small pieces.

Characteristics of Tempered/Toughened glass:

These characteristics explain why tempered/Toughened glass is 5x stronger and most preferred option which is largely available to buy online in Lagos, Nigeria.

  • Mechanical Strength of Tempered Glass = 5x Mechanical strength of Annealed Glass
  • Tempered/Toughened glass is four to five times stronger than annealed glass of the same size and thickness against impact.
  • Tempered glass has higher thermal strength, and it can withstand high temperature changes up to 250°C.
  • Tempered/Toughened glass is considered as safety glass. It is difficult to break and even in the event of a breakage, disintegrates into small relatively harmless globules.
  • Tempering does not alter the basic characteristics of glass such as light transmission and solar radiant heat properties of normal glass.
  • The glass surface after heat treatment has the same resistance to surface damage as annealed glass.
  • Tempered/Toughened glass cannot be cut or altered.
  • Strength & Safety Considerations
    • Four to five times stronger than annealed glass
    • Two to three times stronger than heat strengthened glass
    • Fragments into small, relatively harmless pieces, reducing the likelihood of injury.

Need for Tempered/Toughened Glass especially in Lagos, Nigeria:

There is an increasing need for the use of tempered/toughened glass in Lagos, Nigeria especially in specific areas of the building such as shower cubicle, front door and table tops. Glass.com.ng has provided the best means to buy tempered/toughened glass online

Tempering increases tensile strength, thermal shock resistance, and safety of normal glass. It also increases its heat withstanding capacity. Because of these properties, tempered glass is preferred in applications where strength, safety and thermal resistance are important considerations.

You can order for your tempered/toughened glass of any dimension and thickness online in Lagos and any other places within Nigeria by clicking on this link provided http://glass.com.ng/order-online/ and get it delivered to you.

Cleaning Glass

Regular cleaning of glass is important to ensure that there is no discolouration and deterioration at the glass surface. Indeed it may be necessary according to the atmospheric conditions prevailing in the area to determine the frequency for regular cleaning, particularly where infrequent cleaning could result in obstinate dirt having to be removed by methods and labour at greater cost. Again the usual effect of dirt on glass is to reduce the light transmittance, which was probably one of the reasons for the glass being installed in the first place.

Generally, cleaning of glass as a routine operation is by the use of warm water with soap or mild liquid detergent, followed by rinsing with clean water. Washleather or cloth is suitable to use for transparent glass but certain types of washleather or imitation washleather have been know to cause streaking if the glass has not been initially polished with a cloth. For glass having a textured surface into which it may not be possible to clean off with a cloth, a stiff plastic or bristle brush is effective. Obstinate dirt in such cases can usually be removed by
using either whiting in water or methylated spirits.

If dirt, contamination, staining and the like are not overcome by these normal methods, then other means may be adopted but before choosing a particular form of treatment it is advisable to determine wherever possible the actual cause of the trouble. If the cause is an on-going one, the first step should be to prevent further trouble at source. The remedy perhaps could be in the sealing of concrete lintels or the provision of drip channels so that the rain will not run down the glass surface. However, where obstinate staining is present, the answer may be in the use of a specialist cleaning and polishing process by experts.

Self cleaning glass must be cleaned as soon as possible after the building work is completed by rinsing with water to remove all traces of dust, abrasives etc. Then either spray on or apply by a saturated cloth a cleaning solution (a mild detergent and water solution is recommended) onto the coated surface. Gently rub the wetted coated surface with a clean, lint-free towel or cloth. Rinse with water and wipe nearly dry with a dry, clean, lint-free towel or cloth. The use of a squeegee on the coated surface is not recommended. If it is absolutely necessary to use a
squeegee then particular care must be taken to prevent any metal parts from contacting the coating or dirt particles becoming trapped under the blade and dragged across the coating. If the water quality is particularly hard (i.e. greater than 180ppm combined content of calcium carbonate CaCO2 and magnesium carbonate MgCO3) then rinsing water should be softened through a domestic water softener or through the addition of a couple of drops of detergent
(dishwashing detergent suffices) to litre of water.

Insulating glass units should be cleaned in accordance with the types of glass used in the construction of the unit, as described for clear and self cleaning glasses. Body tinted glasses and surface coated glasses should be cleaned carefully to avoid surface scratching. When cleaning excess water from the surface of any unit, no water or cleaning agents should be allowed to come into permanent contact with the edge seal due to poor perimeter seals or
blocked draining holes in drained and ventilated frames, they may attack the edge seal of the unit.

Fire resistant glasses constructed in a laminated form must not have water in contact with the edge of the glass. The special materials used in the lamination of the glass will be affected by contact with water.

The information provided in this document provides general guidance as to best practice with regard to glass

It does not, however, constitute any representation or warranty with respect to the products, their suitability for any application.

Under no circumstances must a metal scraper ever be used to remove excess paint from the surface of glass, it will result in surface scratching.
